Chemo Kitty

Jason and I were acquired by a cat this Thanksgiving. We went to visit his Mom, who lives in a rural area just south of Albany, New York, next door to an animal shelter, and wound up returning with a cat in the car. And we all know how much cats like cars.

The animal shelter charges a fee to people who drop off animals, so many are just dumped outside, left to roam the area. Jason's Mom had been feeding this cat for the last two months, but couldn't bring it in due to allergies. She was concerned what would happen come winter.

Jason's cousin, Andrew, claimed the cat was male and neutered. We decided to call him Henry Highball (Henry was the name I gave him, Highball was in reference to Jason's previous part-time cat, Lowball, who looked a bit like the new cat). And since there was no way to tell if the cat was carrying Feline AIDS or Feline Leukemia, he got the nickname of Chemo Kitty. In fact, I suggested that if he did have leukemia, he could join me on Monday when I start chemo.

Jason took him to the vet the next day and we were thankful to discover he didn't have either disease. We also discovered that he was neither a he nor fixed. In fact, she was probably pregnant (it's a general assumption that any female cat who isn't fixed and is allowed outdoors is pregnant). It's like discovering that a new toy you bought came with a bonus pack.

We re-christened the cat Penny Highball. She's white and ginger - kind of the colour of a penny. Plus people are always throwing pennies away. And she kept returning to my mother-in-law's like a bad penny.
